More from Maui

I’m sunburned in spite of sunscreen, I got my butt kicked body boarding (like a true idiot tourist), and our rental car takes about 10 minutes to get started and has no A/C… but we’re still smiling. Our whale watch and heli-tour were amazing… the pictures below were taken by Abbey’s camera. The humpbacks were breaching all over the place.

Did you get to get out on the water in your kayak?

Hey Jason,

We’re kayaking Saturday. There’s no kayakable “whitewater” on the island, so everything is sea kayaking. Tomorrow we head out at 4:45am for sunrise on the summit of Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano, then another round of whale watching. I’ll try to bring you some pipeline porter. Take care.

Great photos! You should get to Kauai next time and kayak the NaPali Coast - 17 miles of the most amazing shore you've ever seen (like that bottom photo thre) - you can get into the sea caves and actually climb the walls of some and jump into the water - amazing!

Also, those whale shots are awesome. I saw a humpback breach while sea kayaking in Alaska. He was about 50 yards away and surprised me and my friend as we were paddling around these quiet bays harrassing the otters near Homer, and as we were pumping our fists in the air and screaming like idiots because we were so excited, he did it AGAIN! Of course, no cameras ready. Damn. :-) Thanks for the great photos - looking forward to more of them!

Hey Megan,

Thanks for the comment. Alaska is on the list again, maybe this summer if things go well. I’ve been twice and I have family there, but … it’s a big place and there’s so much more to do. It would be incredible to be in a kayaking and see a whale from water level. Our kayaking involved sea turtles. They were really neat, but didn’t have that, “holy crap, a whale” impact.

Thanks again for reading the blog… also if you ever interested in posting about your adventures, just let me know. My co-blogger and the Powderfin Major General Jay is a knuckle-dragger too, so we won’t pick on you too bad)… cs@powderfin.com

Cheers,

Sconnie

Hey Sconnie,

I'd love to post about my adventures when I actually get to have them - work and budgetary concerns limit my travels at the moment (darn the responsibility!), but there are a lot of local (read: cheap) trips planned for the near future. Although I suppose I could scrounge up some old photos and stories if you're amenable to that idea.

I'm jealous you have family in Alaska - what a great excuse to get up there!

Glad to hear there's another knuckledragger on your blog crew - usually I go with a bunch of skiers so I've been sufficiently abused and can take it! ;-)
