LoG Jam - October 2013

I had a rare opportunity to for an all guys trip to Land of the Giants on the Missouri in early October, and was able to confirm that the place lives up to it's name.  It was rare in the fact that in my buddy's busy lives of girlfriends, wives, summer visitors, new babies, jobs, and businesses, like most folks, we are generally unable to all get away at the same time.  This weekend the starts aligned, and we headed out on Friday afternoon with a couple of power boats full of gear, a little beer, and a whole bunch of hope for big trout.

I think we were a bit early for the huge browns to be doing their fall spawning thing, but the rainbows were eager to oblige, and we took full advantage.  After a morning of catching several sizeable fish on nymphs, we switched up to streamers in the evening for a change of pace and a chance at a real bruiser.  The ol' Sparkle Minnow did it's thing in the waning hours of the day, producing this guy.

My buddy John lucked out by catching a walleye on the fly as well, which paired nicely with a couple teals that my roomate downed that day.

It ended up being a great weekend getaway for the boys - minus the minor inconvenience of running out of gas on the way out on Sunday... luckily there were some kind people at the marina willing to bring us out some gas.  Nice to mark that one off the list... I hope to go back soon.

October Fishing | River Otter Fly Shop and Outfitters

October Fishing | River Otter Fly Shop and Outfitters:

Spent a great day out on the Clark Fork last Sunday with my long-time friend Brian Beckman and Missoula Guide Mark Hodek....

Pretty amazing day weather-wise for mid-October... had some luck on a Purple Raisin with a bead dropper.  Some good dry eats and some squaw, whitey's tossed in the mix.... Not to mention these two birds.

KILL House Bill 309

Dear Representatives,

I am writing you to voice my concern over HB 309 and its detrimental effects on Montana’s existing Stream Access Law. Rep. Jeff Wellborn (R-Dillon), HB 309 sponsor, is proposing unnecessary changes which threaten Montana’s heralded stream access laws.

As a 10 year resident, homeowner, Montana small business owner, and avid fisherman, this bill would adversely affect my quality of life, my ability to conduct business, and my ability to help promote tourism to the state. I personally have several visitors per year who come to Montana just to fish with me. I’m not a guide, just a proud resident of a state that has (due to the will of its people) chosen to keep public water public. These visitors spend dollars in Montana that they earned Denver, Chicago, San Diego, Omaha, etc., when they visit here specifically to share in what is in my opinion the best attribute of Montana, our public waterways. As you know, fly-fishing tourism brings in millions of dollars of revenue to the state, why jeopardize the jobs and dollars coming into the state for the benefit of a few landowners?

This is yet another attempt by a select few to undermine Montana’s existing laws covering the public’s right to access streams within the high-water mark. I simply cannot see an upside to this bill, other than a few landowners being able to have a bit more privacy and most likely become a bit richer once they introduce pay-to-play “angling clubs” like they do in Colorado. Montana is the last best place, let’s keep it that way.

Mr. Wellborn and those associated with writing this bill did not involve any meaningful discussion with the parties it will most adversely affect — the public — which you are given the honor and responsibility of representing. By using misleading language, this bill seeks to re-define bodies of water with long standing historical public use. This bill is not what the people of Montana want.

I urge you to do everything you can to defeat HB 309.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

Jay Gill

Klean Kanteen Breast Cancer Fund Prayer Flag Water Bottle

Pink is often the color associated with the fight against breast cancer and finding a cure, but for Klean Kanteen's partner, the Breast Cancer Fund, the color is purple and the focus is prevention.

    Boca Grande - May 2010

I was able to get outta town for a week in late May, perfect timing for a winter escape. Yes, I said winter. It was still winter here in Bozeman in late May. My friend AD and her family were gracious enough to allow me to hang out for the weekend, and it was amazing to say the least. We did a bunch of Tarpon fishing each day, picking up a nice Siver King about once a day at sunset. They were on the move in the Pass at Boca Grande, so there were a bunch of boats and a bunch of action to watch. Lots of hoots and hollers from nearby boats, as Tarpon picked up pass crabs and performed acrobatics with power and style.

I was lucky enough to be the first one of our group to hook up with one on the trip, and it was by far the most powerful fish I've ever fought. Never in my life have I even considered throwing in the towel against a fish, but about 15 minutes in I have to admit it did cross my mind. Of course I didn't give up, and here's what the beauty looked like...
